After the farewell, I started cycling in grey weather. It was raining lightly from time to time but the morning was so quiet, I kind of liked it. At the beginning, I followed my old running track along the Dreisam. Good memories..
Then I passed the Kaiserstuhl and got stuck in a really annoying forest. I had to pass some mud roads and my bike looked like a mess.
Then came the Rhine and I passed it over a very long Island with a crappie road on it. Finally in France, I reached the Rhone canal soon after, which I followed all the way to Strasbourg.
It was pretty boring but I could make good speed at least. I reached Strasbourg around12:30, after about 80km. I bought lunch there from a bakery. French pastries are still amazing!
Strasbourg has a nice center. A lot of old building and it is very lively. Funny thing, a girl asked me about my bike travel. She was a bike traveler herself. So she asked me if I wanted to stay at her place for the night. It was a very nice offer but I still had a long way ahead of me. So I went on and followed another canal further to the north. I made good speed again but it was getting so damn boring. I followed canals for 80km in total on this day. When I finally went into the Vosges mountain I didn’t mind the hills very much because it was a change in the landscape finally.
It was nice to cycle in the autumn colored forest. Too bad that I had to hurry because it was getting late. I stopped to take one picture at least:
I was getting so tired in the afternoon. Probably the last days took their toll. But I had to go on because there were no hotels or hostels anywhere around in the northern Vosges. Sarreguemines was the next bigger town and my goal of the day. I reached it finally short before 6 o’clock after passing some last (really mean) hills. In the end I cycled 185km again and was pretty done so that I didn’t care much about the hotel anymore. I found one in the town and it was not very great but very friendly staff at least.
After a well deserved shower (I was covered in mud and flies, so many flies!), I walked in the town for a bit to find some dinner. It was pretty nice in the evening and I was feeling better.
A very tough day! But I think I can take it a bit more easy in the next two days.
